Why Industry Volunteers Are Essential to Inspiring the Next Generation of Construction Professionals
As Legacy Builders continues to grow across Ontario, one thing is becoming very clear: students are genuinely interested in learning about careers in construction. Teachers are reaching out, sessions are filling quickly, and schools are excited to bring the program into their classrooms. Now, the biggest need is industry volunteers who are willing to help make these sessions possible.
This fall, we’re expanding further into Halton Region, Hamilton, Niagara, Woodstock, and London, and bookings are already coming in fast. The demand is there, but the success of the program depends on people from the industry stepping up to share their knowledge and experiences with students.
Legacy Builders was created to help Grade 7 and 8 students discover the many opportunities available in construction. While skilled trades are a huge part of the industry, students are often surprised to learn about the wide range of careers connected to construction, including project management, engineering, estimating, safety, accounting, design, technology, and leadership roles.
What makes the program so impactful is the chance for students to hear directly from real people working in the industry. When volunteers share their stories, talk about their career paths, and answer questions honestly, students start to see construction differently. For many of them, it’s the first time they realize the industry could actually be a path for them.
A classroom presentation becomes much more meaningful when students can meet someone who works in the field, manages projects, operates equipment, works in an office role, or helps bring buildings and infrastructure to life every day. Those conversations help break down outdated stereotypes and show students that construction offers stable, rewarding, and well-paying careers with endless opportunities for growth.
The construction industry is also facing a growing workforce shortage, and programs like Legacy Builders are one way we can start addressing that challenge early. By reaching students before they enter high school, we can help them better understand the opportunities available and encourage more young people to consider careers in the industry.
The good news is that volunteering is simple. You do not need teaching experience or public speaking skills to participate. Our sessions are structured, interactive, and fully supported by the Legacy Builders team. We simply need people who are passionate about the industry and willing to spend time encouraging the next generation.
Every volunteer brings something valuable to the classroom. Whether you work in the trades, project management, engineering, administration, supply, safety, or leadership, your experience can help inspire students and open their eyes to possibilities they may not have considered before.
As we continue growing into new regions, we’re looking for volunteers in:
Halton Region
Hamilton
Niagara
Woodstock
London
This program works because of the people behind it. The conversations happening in these classrooms today are helping shape the future workforce of our industry tomorrow.
If you’ve ever wanted to give back to the industry, support students, or help change perceptions around construction careers, this is an opportunity to make a real impact.
